Sounds of the Ocean Isn't Just a Show… It's a Love Letter to the Sea

"Sometimes saving a life doesn't begin with a grand gesture. Sometimes it begins with one less plastic bag finding its way into the sea."
There are experiences that entertain you, and then there are experiences that stay with you long after the lights come up.
Sounds of the Ocean is the latter.
As someone who has spent more than a decade volunteering at aquariums, who is a certified diver, and who feels more at home beneath the waves than almost anywhere else, I walked into MOSI with incredibly high expectations. I'm convinced there's mermaid somewhere in my DNA and my birthstone is definitely a seashell. The ocean has always been where my soul feels most at peace.
So, to say I was excited for Sounds of the Ocean would be an understatement.
Sounds of the Ocean is an award-winning immersive experience created by ocean artivist, director and composer Joshua Sam Miller and co-director and expressive arts therapist Elise Lein. Combining the haunting songs of whales and dolphins, original music, immersive visual art, and breathtaking ocean imagery, the experience guides audiences on what the creators describe as a "mindful underwater odyssey"…one designed to inspire both inner calm and a deeper connection to the ocean.
More than a beautiful show, it's a movement. As an official UN Ocean Decade Activity, Sounds of the Ocean has captivated audiences in 26 countries, appeared at international climate conferences and global festivals, and donates 10 percent of every ticket sold to local ocean conservation efforts. It's immersive entertainment with a purpose, inviting audiences to experience the wonder of the sea, while inspiring them to help protect it.
Knowing that 10 percent of every ticket supports local ocean conservation efforts made me love the experience before it even began. It felt perfectly aligned with the message the creators hoped audiences would leave with…that wonder is most powerful when it inspires action.
As the lights dimmed, I was immediately captivated. Brilliant colors danced across the dome like currents flowing through a coral reef. Waves of blues, purples, and greens blended effortlessly together, creating an almost meditative state.
But then something funny happened.
I found myself wondering, "Where are the whales? Where are the dolphins? I was promised whales."
Thankfully, I resisted the urge to get impatient, because the creators knew exactly what they were doing.
Rather than immediately overwhelming the audience with majestic marine life, they gently guide you into the experience. They invite you to slow down, breathe, and let go of everything happening outside those walls. The journey is intentional. The anticipation becomes part of the magic.
Then, almost without warning, glowing illustrations of dolphins emerged from the swirling colors. Their songs and clicks echoed throughout the theater before the artwork slowly dissolved...and suddenly there they were.
Two magnificent bottlenose dolphins. Larger than life.
Swimming so gracefully across the dome that it genuinely felt like I could reach out and touch them. For just a moment, I wasn't sitting in a theater…I was underwater.

And then came the whales. Every appearance somehow more breathtaking than the last. Listening to their haunting songs, while watching these gentle giants move through the deep left me unexpectedly emotional. I found myself smiling one minute, and wiping away tears the next.
If you've ever had the privilege of hearing whales underwater while diving, or even through a hydrophone, you know there's something ancient and deeply spiritual about their voices. This experience captures that feeling beautifully.
But what moved me most wasn't just the beauty. It was the honesty.
Without saying much at all, Sounds of the Ocean quietly reminds us of what is at stake. Images of pollution appear. Plastic drifts through the water. Marine life is forced to navigate what we have left behind.
One moment, in particular, caught me completely off guard. I never imagined that watching a single green plastic bag drift across a giant screen could stir so much emotion. Yet, seeing it suspended in the water, moving through the ocean where it didn't belong, was haunting. It was a beautiful, but heartbreaking, reminder that every piece of plastic we keep out of our oceans matters. Sometimes saving a life doesn't require a grand gesture…it simply starts with one less plastic bag finding its way into the sea.
As someone who spends countless hours talking with aquarium guests about reducing plastic waste and protecting our oceans, I appreciated that the message never felt preachy. There were no lectures. No guilt. No finger-pointing. Instead, the filmmakers simply held up a mirror. They let the images speak for themselves. In just a matter of moments, you feel the weight of what we're doing to this incredible ecosystem.

And then they bring you back.
Back to the whales.
Back to the dolphins.
Back to the beauty.
Back to hope.
By the time the experience ended, I realized something I didn't think was possible. I walked in believing my heart couldn't love the ocean any more than it already did. I walked out realizing it could. I left feeling more connected, more inspired, more determined to volunteer, more committed to supporting conservation efforts, and more motivated to keep sharing the message that every small action matters.
That's the true power of Sounds of the Ocean.
It doesn't ask you to love the ocean…it helps you experience why so many of us already do. And once you've felt that connection, protecting it no longer feels like an obligation. It feels personal.
If Sounds of the Ocean comes to a city near you, make the time to experience it. If you're fortunate enough to be in the Tampa Bay area while it's showing at MOSI, don't miss it. MOSI continues to bring incredible immersive experiences to our community. I previously had the opportunity to experience Mesmerica there (which you can also read about here), and I continue to be impressed by the quality and creativity of their programming.
But if I'm choosing favorites... This one rises to the top. It's calming. It's breathtaking. It's emotional. It's inspiring. And if you leave without feeling even the slightest tug on your heart for our oceans and the incredible creatures that call them home... I'll be genuinely surprised.
Because Sounds of the Ocean doesn't just immerse you beneath the waves.
It reminds you that the ocean isn't just something to admire…it's something we're all responsible for protecting.
